ALMANAC

On this date in 1876, Sioux and Northern Cheyenne Indians killed Lt. 
Col. George A. Custer and all members of his 7th U.S. Cavalry 
battalion at the Battle of the Little Bighorn, Montana.  The site is 
preserved is Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument.

INCIDENTS

00-313 - Independence NHP (PA) - Special Event

On June 15th, the park held a ceremony marking the opening of "Great 
Essentials," a major new exhibit in the west wing of Independence Hall 
featuring the Philip Syng inkstand, believed to have been used for the 
ceremonial signing of both the Declaration of Independence and the 
Constitution, and the park's copies of the those two documents and the 
Articles of Confederation. The exhibit was funded by a grant from the 
Pew Charitable Trusts, much of which funded state of the art 
protective cases for the inkstand and documents and development of

00-314 - Richmond NB (VA) - Special Event

The park held the grand opening of its new visitor center at the 
Tredegar Iron Works, a National Historic Landmark, on June 17th. 
Director Stanton was the keynote speaker; about 500 people attended 
the ceremony. The focus of the 12,000-square-foot visitor center is on 
Richmond's battlefields, the participants, Richmond's home front, and 
the context of the Civil War. The Tredegar Iron Works were the South's 
largest major antebellum iron works capable of producing cannon and 
railroad rails. It supplied the Confederate army with more than 1,100 
cannon. The project was undertaken in conjunction with the Richmond

Death Valley NP (CA) - The park has broken another temperature record. 
The high on June 15th was 126 degrees, surpassing the old record for 
the date by four degrees.
