INCIDENTS

00-347 - Padre Island NS (TX) - Follow-up: Serious Employee Injury

On July 1st, ranger Bob Hansen was struck by a vehicle driven by S.C.,
48, of Corpus Christi, causing injuries that led to the
amputation of Hansen's right leg below the knee. S.C. fled, but made
it only a short distance before a tire fell off his vehicle. He was
arrested and taken to the Nueces County jail, where tests showed he
had been driving with a blood alcohol concentration of more than twice
the legal limit. On November 8th, S.C. was sentenced in federal
court to three years in prison and ordered to pay $250,000 in
restitution. Hansen recently returned to work on a limited basis as he
continues to recover from his injuries. S.C. had a clean driving
record prior to this felony conviction. [Tom Crowson, PAIS, 11/27]

00-717 - Boston NHP (MA) - Assault on Ranger

Rangers stopped a vehicle suspected of being involved in drug
trafficking on the night of November 16th. As they were attempting to
identify the car's four occupants, one of them - later identified as
S.N. - attempted to flee. S.N., who has an extensive
history of violent criminal activity, became combative and resisted
efforts to arrest him. Rangers were forced to use pepper spray to
incapacitate him. S.N. was handcuffed, but continued to fight the
rangers and succeeded in kicking and kneeing one of them in the groin.
He also made several attempts to bite rangers. None of the rangers was
significantly injured. S.N. was arrested and has been charged with
assault on a federal officer. He has been released pending trial.

00-718 - Oklahoma City NM (OK) - Assist: Assault on Officers, Fatal
         Shooting of Assailant

On the evening of November 21st, ranger Matt Fuller was advised by
city police that several officers were pursuing a man who had been
involved in a fight and had assaulted officers. Fuller saw the man
running directly toward the park, with the officers in pursuit. He
ordered him to stop; he briefly did so, then picked up a blunt object
from a pile of debris, raised it over his head, and continued running
parallel to the park. Three officers stopped him; all three were
assaulted, and the man was ultimately shot and killed. Fuller detained
a second person near the park when the shots were fired, then turned
him over to city police. Fuller's quick actions prevented both men
from entering the park and threatening visitors. The park is assisting
city police in the investigation. [Scott Bentley, CR, OKCI, 11/22]

00-719 - Wright Brothers NM (NC) - Storm Damage

Heavy rains and wind over the past weekend exacerbated a long-standing
problem at the park's visitor center, forcing its closure. Roof leaks
have compromised the building's electrical system, and the structural
integrity of the ceiling threatened visitor and employee safety and
artifacts depicting the Wright brothers' story. The latter have been
moved. Park grounds remain open to visitors, but major repairs to the
building will be necessary before it can again be used. Members of the
park's staff are assessing means for repairing the building and
possible use of temporary structures in the interim. [CRO, CAHA,
11/27]
