ALMANAC

On this date in 1847, a band of Cayuse Indians attacked Narcissa and
Marcus Whitman's Protestant mission at Waiilatpu, Oregon, killing the
Whitmans and 11 others and leading settlers in the Willamette and
lower Columbia valleys to wage war against the Cayuse. Whitman
Mission National Historic Site preserves the site.

INCIDENTS

00-720 - Big South Fork NRRA (KY) - Accidental Shooting

On November 25th, rangers Barry Melloan and Randy Justice were
notified that a shooting had occurred at Long Field just off Highway
297. They found that hunter B.D. had shot himself in the leg.
B.D. told the rangers that he'd returned to camp from hunting and was
in the process of taking a 9mm semi-automatic pistol from his pocket
when it discharged. The bullet hit him in the leg, causing minor
injuries. He was taken to a county hospital, where he was treated and
released. No charges were filed. [Frank Graham, CR, BISO, 11/27]

00-721 - Badlands NP (SD) - Structural Fire

Local residents reported a column of dark smoke rising from the park's
maintenance shop complex on Wednesday, November 22nd. The report came
just an hour after park employees had left the area for the holiday.
An unoccupied house trailer located in the park's materials yard was
found engulfed in flame, with only two walls still standing. Park
staff and fire brigade members contained the fire to the trailer; no
other structures were damaged. Although the brigade responded quickly,
the trailer was a total loss. Arson is believed to have been the
cause. The trailer had been previously moved to the area for
demolition later this winter. The state fire marshal's office is
investigating. [Mark Gorman, DR, BADL, 11/27]

00-722 - Organ Pipe Cactus NM (AZ) - Drug Arrests, Seizures

A ranger checking sensor activity in a known drug smuggling area on
November 15th found fresh signs of the passage of marijuana
"backpackers." The ranger and a Border Patrol agent tracked the group
and came upon marijuana bundles in makeshift backpacks concealed in
brush and thickets. Tracking efforts continued and led to a group of
smugglers laid up in a wash. Two of them were arrested, and seven
packs with a total of 424 pounds of marijuana were seized. [Karl
Pearson, SPR, ORPI, 11/25]
