MORNING REPORT
To: All National Park Service Areas and Offices
From: Division of Ranger Activities, Washington Office
Day/Date: Tuesday, December 12, 2000
ALMANAC
On this date in 1862, the Union ironclad gunboat Cairo became the
first vessel in history to be sunk by an electrically detonated mine
as it steamed up the Yazoo River north of Vicksburg, Mississippi, to
destroy Confederate batteries and clear channel obstructions. Its
salvaged remains are displayed at Vicksburg National Military Park.
INCIDENTS

Today marks the first anniversary of the murder of ranger Steve
Makuakane-Jarrell. Makuakane-Jarrell's assailant, F.B.,

Prosecution of F.B. is on hold awaiting completion of the evaluation.
[Scott Hinson, SA, YOSE, 12/11]
00-739 - Herbert Hoover NHS (IA) - Storm Impacts
The park was partially closed yesterday due to heavy snow and high
winds. The visitor center remained open, but historic structures and
the presidential library were closed. Law enforcement and maintenance
snow removal employees were working; all other employees were advised
to remain at home. The park will probably reopen today. [Dan Banta,

00-740 - Kings Mountain NMP (SC) - Oil Spill
On December 11th, maintenance workers discovered that the fuel line at
an unoccupied park VIP/SCA housing unit had ruptured, causing about
400 gallons of home heating oil to be released into the soil. The park
is working with the South Carolina Department of Health and
Environmental Control, EPA and a private contractor on cleanup of the
contaminated area. [Chris Revels, CR, KIMO, 12/11]
