INCIDENTS
01-012 - Everglades NP (FL) - Concession Employee Killed in MVA
On January 9th, ranger Kent Looney was contacted by AMFAC, a
concession in the park's Flamingo District, regarding a missing
employee. W.J. of Seward, Alaska, had recently been hired
by AMFAC as a tour boat captain. His wife, who lives in El Paso,
Texas, reported that she'd last heard from him on January 6th, when he
told her he was going out for a motorcycle ride. AMFAC contacted
Looney when W.J. failed to appear for work. Rangers searched the
Flamingo area and began a missing persons investigation. The NCIC
entry that they filed received responses from the Florida Highway
Patrol and Miami-Dade and Hialeah police. The subsequent inquiry led
to the determination that W.J. had been killed in a single-vehicle
motorcycle accident on a major expressway in Miami-Dade County. [CRO,

PARKS AND PEOPLE
Indiana Dunes NL (IN) - Richard Littlefield, the park's chief ranger,
will retire next month after more than 34 years in the NPS. Dick has
been chief ranger at Indiana Dunes since September, 1981. Littlefield
says his choice of professions was greatly influenced by his uncle, a
park ranger for the state of California. After graduating from
Sacramento State and working as a seasonal in the California state
parks, Dick landed his first permanent NPS job at Grand Canyon in the
fall of 1966. His career since then has been dominated, as he says, by
"boats and water," including tours at Lake Meredith (66-70), Virgin
Islands (70-73), Cape Hatteras (73-75) Gulf Islands (75-78) and the
Pacific Northwest Regional Office (78-81). Dick has chosen to retire
on Groundhog Day, February 2nd. If you have cards, notes, funny
stories or photos to be shared at his retirement party on February
1st, please contact Joni Jones by cc:Mail or at 219-926-7561 x320. [Al
Nash, PAO, INDU]
