NATIONAL PARK SERVICE
MORNING REPORT
To: All National Park Service Areas and Offices
From: Division of Ranger Activities, Washington Office
Day/Date: Thursday, January 18, 2001
INCIDENTS
00-779 - Gateway NRA (NJ/NY) - Drug Arrest; Burglary Investigation
Rangers Tony Macri and Pete Tortorell made a routine traffic stop in
the Sandy Hook Unit on December 15th. The female driver behaved
suspiciously, so they asked for and received consent to search the
vehicle. The rangers found 10 white pills packaged for distribution, a
small quantity of marijuana, and 17 prescription codeine pills. The
driver told them that the packaged pills were also codeine, and that
they'd been obtained from a classmate at school. Further investigation
led to the discovery that the pills had been stolen along with another
150 pills from a pharmacy in Monroe, New Jersey. The pills were being
sold and distributed to high school students. The driver provided
rangers with information on the main person involved in the burglary.
The information was relayed to a Monroe detective, who was able to
clear the burglary case and stop the sale of additional pills from
this source. [Thomas Lobkowicz, GATE, 1/16]
01-013 - Independence NHP (PA) - Special Event
On Monday, January 15th, the annual ceremony honoring Dr. Martin
Luther King, Jr. was held in the Liberty Bell Pavilion. Special guest
Martin Luther King, III symbolically "tapped" the Liberty Bell at noon
in honor of the slain civil rights leader. Several other dignitaries
attended. The event received extensive local media coverage. No
incidents were reported. [Phil Sheridan, PAO, INDE, 1/17]
FIRE MANAGEMENT
National Fire Plan
No new information. Please check the NPS Fire Management Program
Center web page (www.fire.nps.gov) for further information on fire
plan projects.
Fire Management
The NPS Fire Management Program Center web site - known as FireNet -
has been revised and upgraded. Visitors to the site now can easily
access information about fire jobs from the front page. Interested
applicants can access job info by state, then directly link to the
park unit to learn more about the park. The URL (page address) has
also changed to make it easier for virtual visitors. The new address
is http://www.nps.gov/fire, which is in line with NPS park unit web
address formats. It also makes it easier to access job information, as
there is a direct address for fire jobs: http://www.nps.gov/fire/jobs.
Please note that FireNet can still be reached via old addresses.
FireNet is currently featured on the front page of the NPS ParkNet
home page, found at: http://www.nps.gov. Visitors to the page are
invited to learn about parks, people and fire. ParkNet is one of the
more popular government web sites, with over a half million hits
daily. FireNet will be featured on the ParkNet home page
intermittently over coming months. Fire will also be incorporated into
the NatureNet home page. FireNet has been a group effort,
necessitating about 1600 hours of work since last November. A number
of employees have been involved, but special thanks go to Tina Boehle
(WHMI), Karen LaMay (AKRO), David Elkowitz (ELMA). and the staff from
the WASO Information Management Division. Comments/concerns about
FireNet are welcome. Please note that modifications to FireNet may
take time to complete until a position which includes technical web
responsibilities is filled. [Roberta D'Amico, FMPC]

celebration at the Lincoln Memorial this afternoon. More than 200,000
people are expected to attend that event, and area roads will be
intermittently closed. You may therefore find it difficult to contact
WASO staff today. [Dave Barna, Public Affairs, WASO]
