FIRE MANAGEMENT
National Fire Plan
The draft 10-year comprehensive strategy is being reviewed by the
bureaus. Department of the Interior comments will be compiled and
integrated with Forest Service comments. The National Association of
State Foresters will meet next week in San Antonio to discuss the
document. Attending that meeting will be Bill Pierce, representing
the Department of the Interior, and Janet Anderson-Tyler, representing
the Forest Service.
The 10-year comprehensive strategy will provide the components of a
long-term approach to dealing with wildland fire, hazardous fuels, and
restoration of vegetation burned by fires. It outlines how federal,
state and local agencies and organizations plan to restore and
maintain fire-adapted ecosystems across the nation. The objectives are
to reduce the risk and consequence of wildfire, better ensure public
and firefighter safety, improve the resilience and sustainability of
forests and rangelands at risk, and conserve and enhance species.
Park Fires
Everglades NP (FL) - The Mustang Fire burned about 400 acres in saw
grass on Monday. Crews worked on the fire until 10 p.m. and returned
on Tuesday to secure the west flank. The fire had burned between 800
and 1,000 acres as of late yesterday morning. Containment was expected
by 6 p.m. last night.
