INCIDENTS

01-249 - San Antonio Missions NHP (TX) - Train Derailment

On the afternoon of Sunday, June 3rd, a Union Pacific train derailed
within the park. Nine cars of a 136-car coal train derailed, with four
of the cars spilling 160 tons of coal on private and park lands and
into the historic San Juan Acequia (irrigation ditch). There were no
fatalities or injuries associated with the accident, which is still
under investigation. Protection staff arrived shortly after the
derailment and worked with city, state and federal agencies and
railroad representatives to secure the scene and start the clean-up
process. [Rich Arias, ACR, SAAN, 6/4]

01-250 - Organ Pipe Cactus NM (AZ) - Exposure Fatality

A hiker found the body of an illegal immigrant just north of the
two-way junction on Ajo Mountain Drive on the evening of June 2nd.
Although the cause of death is unknown, exposure appears to be likely.
A Mexican voter identification card on his person provide tentative
identification as 35-year-old B.A.-Z. of Morales,
Mexico. The case was turned over to Pima County Sheriffs Office. The
Border Patrol assisted at the scene. [Dale Thompson, CR, ORPI, 6/4]

Park Fire Situation

Everglades NP (FL) - The Squaw Creek Fires received some rain on
Sunday. Squaw Creek 1 grew to about 552 acres and had only a few
interior smokes showing; Squaw Creek 2 grew to 2,200 acres by Sunday
afternoon and had reached 3,800 acres by Monday morning. The primary
growth of the latter has been to the west and should slow as the
perimeter reaches wetter areas along the mangroves. Larger creeks and
rivers are holding the fire, which is spreading primarily through
grassy/marsh areas that finger throughout the mangroves.

Park Fire Danger

Extreme Hawaii Volcanoes NP, Guadalupe Mountains NP, Carlsbad
                Caverns NP
Very High Zion NP

OPERATIONAL NOTES

Message Project Update - Several recent additions have been made to
the NPS graphic identity program website (www.graphics.nps.gov). The
site now includes downloadable templates for three office forms:
telefax cover sheets, transmittal forms and news releases. The forms
are available for both PC and Mac computer platforms in a number of
software programs. Additional print publication templates will
follow. The graphic identity program website now also provides two
ways to obtain official NPS business cards.

Cards may be ordered from the Lighthouse for the Blind in Seattle,
Washington, by downloading the form provided on the website and faxing
or mailing the completed form to 206-322-4419 or 206-322-9180. If you
can't download the form, call 800-799-0402 and a customer service
representative will fax you one. Regulations allow the use of
appropriated funds to purchase business cards providing that
supervisory approval has been granted. The standard business card
costs are: $30 for 250, $36 for 500, and $45 for 1000. The Lighthouse
for the Blind will accept your purchase card, a purchase order, check
or money order as payment. Delivery time is expected to be ten days
from receipt of the order to delivery.

For those not wishing to order preprinted cards, the graphic identity
program website provides an alternate template that may be downloaded
and printed internally. (The card available from the Lighthouse cannot
be printed internally because desktop equipment cannot print to the
edge of the paper as the card design requires.) Government equipment
and materials may be used for internal printing. However, according
to established DOI policy, neither the alternate card nor any other
card may be printed by other vendors using appropriated funds.

As the NPS graphics identity continues to grow, additional
announcements will be posted on the Morning Report. [Gary Cummins,
Site Manager, HFC]

PARKS AND PEOPLE

Denali NP (AK) - The park is seeking a GS-7 law enforcement ranger for
a detail from around July 1st to September 30th in the Savage River
Subdistrict. Strong EMS skills are a plus. Housing is available; the
25% Alaska COLA applies. Outstanding opportunities for wilderness
recreation. Interested individuals should contact Savage River SDR Ann
Marie Chytra at 907-683-9527. [Tom Habecker, DENA]

FILM AT 11...

There's a good article on ranger staffing shortages in National Park
Service areas in California in the Los Angeles Times for June 4th. The
article, entitled "Ranger Shortage Blamed for Park Woes," can be found
at the paper's web site:
http://www.latimes.com/news/state/20010604/t000046647.html. [Dennis
