INCIDENTS

01-251 - Lake Meredith NRA (TX) - Rescue

A 911 call reporting a swimmer in distress at Spring Canyon came in
around 7 p.m. on June 2nd. NPS, Fritch EMS, and Hutchinson County
Sheriff's Office personnel responded. Rangers arrived on scene first
and found that A.M., 24, of Amarillo, had been pulled from
the water by park visitors. She was unconscious but breathing. Rangers
maintained her airway and provided additional medical support until
she was transported to a hospital in Borger. A.M. was released form
the hospital that night. She told rangers that she was attempting to
assist two young teenage males who were having difficulty swimming
when she got herself into trouble. A head count of the beach was
conducted and it was determined that the boys were safe and that all
parties were accounted for. [Rhonda Terry, PIO, LAMR, 6/5]

01-252 - Yosemite NP (CA) - Rescue

On May 25th, the El Portal District ambulance responded to a mutual
aid request for a motorcycle accident outside the park on Highway 140,
four miles west of El Portal. The victim was a 48-year-old male
suffering from a head injury and from serious internal chest and
abdominal injuries. EMS personnel from both the park and county
ambulance crews stabilized the man and transferred him to an air
ambulance. He was flown to a regional trauma center where he was
admitted to the intensive care unit in critical condition. The patient
is currently alert, stable, and in good condition and has been moved
out of intensive care. [Mark Harvey, PR,YOSE, 6/5]

01-253 - Colorado NM (CO) - Rescue

On June 3rd, O.K., 21, of Annandale, Virginia, was in the
park's backcountry with her geology field trip from the University of
Arizona. While climbing on her own away from her group and without
equipment, she slipped and fell approximately 80 feet down a very
steep and rocky slope, suffering two fractured legs, injuries to her
forehead, jaw, and teeth, and numerous contusions. Rangers Bill Row
and Todd Overbye and members of the Lower Valley Fire Department hiked
to her location, treated her injuries, then placed her on a spine
board and into a Stokes litter. Park staff helped the Mesa County
Technical Rescue Team set up a litter raising system. O.K. was
retrieved and transported to the hospital via helicopter. BLM rangers
assisted with traffic control. (Ron Young, CR, COLM, 6/4)

01-254 - Upper Delaware S&RR (PA/NY) - Drowning

On the afternoon of Monday, June 4th, ranger Vince Pareago spotted an
overturned canoe at Stairway Rapids on the Pennsylvania side of the
Delaware River - a remote area with no road access. Pareago went to
assist and found a man administering CPR to his female companion. The
woman, S.W., had been canoeing with him when she fell into the
river. Pareago, an EMT, contacted dispatch and requested EMS
assistance, then took over basic life support. CPR was continued until
an ambulance from Lumberland arrived, launched its airboat from the
New York side, picked up S.W. and EMS personnel, and transported
them to an ambulance waiting on the New York shore. S.W. was
pronounced dead at a local hospital. She was not wearing a life jacket
at the time of the accident. [Cliff Daniels, SPR, UPDE, 6/5]
