MORNING REPORT
To: All National Park Service Areas and Offices
From: Division of Ranger Activities, Washington Office
Day/Date: Monday, June 11, 2001
INCIDENTS
01-263 - Redwood N&SP (CA) - Rescue
On the afternoon of June 3rd, rangers responded to a report that a
woman had sustained serious injuries in a fall near the Klamath River
overlook. A.H., 24, of Arcata, was found lying on rocks near
the ocean, about 200 feet below the bluff where the overlook is
located. Due to the steep, brushy slope and the nature of A.H.'s
injuries, rangers and Del Norte County SAR team members employed a
litter and CHP helicopter to evacuate and transport her to a hospital.
A.H. suffered numerous injuries, including trauma to her back and
possible paralysis. The hoisting winch on the CHP helicopter was a
relatively new addition, and SAR team members first trained with it
just two weeks ago. [Rusty Jensen, Acting CR, REDW, 6/7]
01-264 - Big Bend NP (TX) - MVA with Fatality
A single-vehicle accident occurred on Route 13 about four-and-a-half
miles west of park headquarters on the afternoon of June 6th. A 1996
Ford Explorer driven by L.A., 29, of Houston, was eastbound
when she lost control of the vehicle. The Explorer went off the road
onto the right shoulder, then across both lanes of traffic and off the
left shoulder, at which point it rolled over and came to rest on its
right side. Two-year-old A.A. was sleeping unrestrained on
the rear seat and was ejected from the vehicle. Park rangers and
medics were on scene within 15 minutes and took over treatment of the
injured girl from bystanders who stopped to assist. The child was
taken by park ambulance to Big Bend Regional Medical Center in Alpine,
where she was pronounced dead. A passenger sustained minor injuries.
L.A. was not injured. Evidence found at the scene indicated
that alcohol and/or drugs were a contributing factor in the accident.
Rangers are pursuing felony charges through the U.S. Attorney's
Office. (Mark Spier, Acting CR, BIBE, 6/7)
01-265 - Statue Of Liberty NM (NY) - Attempted Suicide
A 36-year-old woman was seen standing in a closed area of the Liberty
Island shuttle dock on June 5th. Park Police officer Saoud Mohammed
approached her to ask her to leave the area and found that she was
incoherent and indifferent to the officer's directions. As the woman
moved closer to the edge of the dock and attempted to jump into the
water, Mohammed grabbed the back of her jacket and pulled her back
onto the dock. She was combative and tried to pull free, telling the
officer that she wanted to die. She was subdued until other officers
arrived and were able to assist in restraining her, then taken to
Bellevue Medical Center for a psychological evaluation. [Chris Pappas,
USPP, STLI, 6/7]
