INCIDENTS

01-280 - Glacier NP (MT) - Falling Fatality

A worker for a construction company paving part of Going-To-The-Sun
Road contacted the park on the afternoon of June 14th and reported
that a visitor had just notified him of a falling accident at Crystal
Point. D.H., 85, of Salt Lake City, had fallen several hundred
feet from the point. An EMT-certified employee working at the site had
reached D.H. and found that he'd died from severe trauma suffered in
the fall. Investigating rangers determined that D.H. and several
members of his family had stopped at the turnout, and that D.H.
stepped out of the vehicle and fell only moments later. The fall was
not witnessed. [Public Affairs, GLAC, 6/15]

01-281 - Point Reyes NS (CA) - Car Clouting Arrest

A new seasonal ranger on one of his first training patrols noticed a
suspicious person and vehicle at a trailhead parking lot on June 5th.
He and his field training officer investigated and discovered that a
car had been broken into through a smashed window. A deputy was called
to assist in pursuing and apprehending the suspect, who fled the scene
in his truck. Subsequent investigation by rangers revealed that the
suspect had evidently thrown purses and numerous belongings he had
stolen from other vehicles out his window along the road while
fleeing. He has been connected with several other car clouting
incidents in the area over the last few weeks. Charges have been filed
through the county. [Karyl Yeston, DR, PORE, 6/15]

01-282 - Saguaro NP (AZ) - MVA with Fatality

On the afternoon of June 14th, M.L., 46, of Golden Valley,
was heading southbound on Sandario Road on his motorcycle when he
failed to negotiate a curve in the road, crossed the center line, and
slammed into a tractor-trailer. M.L. was pronounced dead at the
scene. His passenger, J.J., 40, of Bullhead City, was
transported to University Medical Center by an AirLife helicopter,
where she remains in critical condition. Alcohol and speed are
suspected to be contributing factors. Toxicology results are pending;
the investigation continues. [Robert E. Stinson, DR, SAGU, 6/16]
