NATIONAL PARK SERVICE MORNING REPORT
To: All National Park Service Areas and Offices From: Division of Ranger Activities, Washington Office Day/Date: Tuesday, January 29, 2002 INCIDENTS 02-020 - San Juan NHS (PR) - Vandalism Park structures and buildings have been vandalized for the second time in a month. The first incident occurred on January 4th, when intruders damaged a historic wall with a slogan pertaining to the on-going confrontation with the Navy over use of the island of Vieques as a bombing range. The estimated cost to repair the damage, including a broken fence, was placed at about $10,000. On January 23rd, rangers investigated another incident of destruction of park-owned property, this one including the theft of several signs. The cost of the damage and theft has been estimated at around $5,000. [Edwin Correa, SPR, SAJU, 1/28] PARKS AND PEOPLE Denali NP&P (AK) - Paul Anderson, deputy regional director for Alaska for the past nine years, has been selected as the park's new superintendent. He takes over the superintendency from Steve Martin, who will move to Grand Teton NP in early February to become the superintendent there. Prior to taking the DRD position, Paul worked as assistant superintendent at Shenandoah for four years and as a DR at Yosemite NP and Delaware Water Gap NRA for ten years. [John Quinley, ARO] Alaska Regional Office (AK) - Marcia Blaszak has been named as Paul Anderson's successor as deputy regional director in Alaska. For the past seven years, she's headed the Service's support office in Anchorage. She will assist RD Rob Arnberger in overseeing the 16 NPS units in the state. Before moving to Alaska in 1994, she served tours as AO for Yellowstone NP, Shenandoah NP and Lassen Volcanic NP and as budget officer for Sequoia and Kings Canyon NPs. [John Quinley, ARO] Carlsbad Caverns NP (NM) - Dan Cockrum, the park's chief of maintenance and supervisory civil engineer, will retire on February 28th after 39 years with the NPS. Dan began his career at Big Bend NP in the summer of 1962 as a seasonal civil engineering aid for the NPS's Western Office of Design and Construction (WODC). He returned the following summer, working on projects for WODC at Glacier NP. After graduating from Texas Tech in 1964 with a degree in civil engineering, Dan became a permanent employee with the NPS at WODC, working on projects in parks all over the western United States-Big Hole NB, Glen Canyon NRA, and Yellowstone, Yosemite, Grand Canyon and Olympic NPs. In 1971, he transferred to Glen Canyon as park engineer/chief of maintenance, followed by similar positions at Cape Cod NS, and Big Bend and Grand Canyon NPs. In 1993, he moved on to the Southeast Regional Office as chief of maintenance and engineering. In April 1999, Dan left Atlanta for the first national park he ever visited-Carlsbad Caverns. A retirement dinner is planned for February 23rd in Carlsbad.
