NATIONAL PARK SERVICE MORNING REPORT
To: All National Park Service Areas and Offices From: Division of Ranger Activities, Washington Office Day/Date: Friday, February 1, 2002 INCIDENTS 02-027 - Cape Cod NS (MA) - MVA with Serious Injury On the afternoon of January 30th, rangers received a report of a single-vehicle accident on Doane Road just west of Coast Guard Beach. When they arrived, they found Eastham police officers and firefighters working to extricate the 17-year-old female trapped inside the car. Additional fire and rescue units were summoned from Orleans to assist with the extrication. Once removed, she was taken by ambulance to Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis, where she is in critical condition with C-spine and chest trauma, femur fractures and a crushed hand. Preliminary investigation and witness statements indicate that the driver was heading east at a high rate of speed when she lost control, almost hit an oncoming vehicle, then left the roadway and struck a tree. [Bob Grant, DR, CACO, 1/31] OPERATIONAL NOTES FLETC Training Class - NPS/FLETC has a priority need to fill a class so that it won't have to be canceled. It's a construction safety course (OSHA 510) and its being offered in Vancouver, Washington, from March 26th to the 29th. The deadline for registration has been bumped a day to February 6th. If you're interested, contact your regional employee development or risk management office or Wiley Golden at FLETC at 912-267-2246 as soon as possible. [Tom Cherry, NPS/FLETC] PARKS AND PEOPLE Lake Roosevelt NRA (WA) -The Division of Interpretation is seeking the assistance of a park with significant winter visitation or that regularly hires winter seasonal interpreters for visitor services or education programs. Last year, Lake Roosevelt hired two permanent visitor protection rangers with a split duty station, spending the busy summer months at Lake Roosevelt and the winter months at a park with heavy winter law enforcement needs. The Division of Interpretation is seeking a park that would be interested in entering into a similar agreement with a yet-to-be-hired GS-025-5/7/9 interpreter. This position is currently considered subject-to-furlough, but we would like to see it become a split duty station position. This is a great way to find year-round permanent employment for positions that would otherwise be filled by either a seasonal employee or a permanent employee with four or five month furlough. If your park would be interested in learning more about this opportunity or would like to participate in this partnership, please contact Lynne Brougher, chief of interpretation, at 509-633-9441 ext. 130.
