To: All National Park Service Areas and Offices From: Division of Ranger Activities, Washington Office Day/Date: Thursday, February 7, 2002 INCIDENTS 02-033 - Ozark NSR (MO) - Serious Employee Illness Superintendent Chris Andress has been diagnosed with liver cancer and will be admitted to Barnes Hospital in St. Louis, Missouri, today. There is no prognosis at present. The park will continue to post information on his condition. Cards can be sent to him at his home. The Morning Report will carry his address and room number at the hospital as soon as it is available. [Patty Kelley, Superintendent's Secretary, OZAR, 2/6] 02-034 - Buffalo NR (AR) - Assist; Structural Fire On the afternoon of February 5th, a park engine and crew responded to a mutual aid call to a trailer house fire outside the park along with a local VFD. The homeowner had tried to start a fire in his stove with an accelerant, causing a fire that destroyed the structure and seriously injured him. He was treated for inhalation injuries at the scene, then transferred to Baxter County Regional Hospital. There were several propane cylinders in the fire, but all vented without exploding. Both the structure and a nearby storage house were destroyed. Three engines and a 2000-gallon water tender were on scene. [Jeff West, BUFF, 2/5] PARKS AND PEOPLE Fire Management Program Center (WASO) - The center has issued a vacancy announcement for a GS-401-14/15 FMO who will serve as director of fire and aviation management in the Ranger Activities Division, duty-stationed in WASO. The person selected will be responsible for formulation and overall technical program direction and coordination for Servicewide wildland fire management, structural fire protection, and aviation program management; will serve as the NPS liaison for functions pertaining to interagency coordination; and will supervise the professional fire, aviation and administrative staffs. The announcement is CCSO-2002-15a and closes on March 5th. (Sue Vap, NPS FMPC) SERO/MWRO/ARO - The announcements for regional structural fire management officers for the three regions have been issued. These are GS-11/12 positions and are 6c covered. Previous firefighting experience is required. The announcement numbers are NPS FIREJOBS 02-025 DEU and NPS FIREJOBS 02-026 MPP.
