INCIDENTS
02-033 - Ozark NSR (MO) - Follow-up: Serious Employee Illness
Chris Andress, former chief ranger for the National Park Service and
current superintendent of Ozark NSR, was airlifted from Van Buren,
Missouri, to St. Louis on February 15th. He is undergoing treatment for
liver cancer at Barnes Jewish Hospital and is resting comfortably. The
family asks that friends not call the hospital. Expressions of support
can be sent to Chris and his family at PO Box 939, Van Buren, MO 63965.

02-039 - Yosemite NP (CA) - Serious Employee Illness
Craig Bates, the park's curator of ethnography, suffered a stroke on
February 6th. Following receipt of a 911 call that morning, the park
communications center dispatched El Portal rangers and a park ambulance
to his residence. A county deputy also responded. He was flown by
medevac helicopter to the hospital in Modesto, where he currently
recovering. It's expected that he will be released to a rehab center
shortly. Visits are not yet encouraged, but cards are welcomed and may
be sent to him care of The Stevenot Family, 2129 Cornwell Avenue,

February 24 - 26: "AMERICANS FOR NATIONAL PARKS," Wyndham City Center,
Washington, DC. Conference focusing on strategies for remedying the
Service's estimated annual operations budget shortfall of $600 million.
Participants include a coalition of scores of national groups; among the
steering committee members are NPCA, the Natural Resources Defense
Council and the Wilderness Society. For information on participation,

February 24 - 28: NATIONAL CONFERENCE ON CULTURAL PROPERTY PROTECTION,
Charleston, SC. Participants and speakers for this conference hail from
institutions and professional security organizations worldwide,
including the American Association of Museums (AAM), the FBI, and the
American Society of Industrial Security (ASIS). The theme of the 2002
conference is "Celebrating 25 Years of Training Excellence." Several
sessions have been scheduled on how the events that occurred on and
after September 11, 2001have impacted the security of cultural
institutions throughout the United States and abroad. The National

March 8 - 10: "DOMESTIC TRANQUILITY: THE VICTORIAN HOME," 2002
GETTYSBURG WOMEN'S HISTORY SYMPOSIUM, Gettysburg, PA. The symposium will
be a celebration of Victorian life and manners during the middle 1800s.
It will be held in the park's Cyclorama Center from the afternoon of
March 8th through noon on March 10th. The registration fee is $95. To

events during the Gettysburg campaign and how they affected the outcome

April 14 - 19: DOI FACILITY MANAGERS CONFERENCE, Town and Country Hotel,
San Diego, CA. his conference, sponsored by the Department of the
Interior's Planning, Design Construction and Maintenance Council, will
provide a forum for staff to meet and exchange information on facility
management issues/topics and training related to facilities and
infrastructure operation, maintenance, condition assessment, database

This four-day national conference, the third of its kind, will focus on
the preservation and management of historic roads. It follows highly
successful meetings in Los Angeles in 1998 and Morristown in 2000 and
continues the dialogue on effective tools and techniques for balancing
use and safety with preservation. Sponsored by the National Trust for
Historic Preservation, the National Park Service, FHWA, the Nebraska
Department of Roads, the American Association of State Highway and

* April 23 - 25: MANAGING EMPLOYEE SAFETY AND SECURITY IN THE NEXT
DECADE, Phoenix, AZ. This Servicewide conference will offer current
information on a variety of occupational safety, health and security
issues, including terrorism, biohazards and workplace preparedness;
workers compensation case management; federal recordkeeping; structural
fire; job hazard analyses; SMIS; and root cause analyses. Keynote
speakers include Joe Avery, superintendent of Manhattan Sites, who will
speak about the park's response to September 11th, and David Herbert of
the National Safety Council, who will speak on safety excellence in park
operations. Two small-group certification sessions will be offered for
the American Heart Association's "Heartsaver AED" course. Registration
