INCIDENTS

02-085 - Fredericksburg-Spotsylvania NMP (VA) - Death of Employee

When G.K., the superintendent's secretary, failed to arrive for
work on Tuesday, a check was made of her residence. The responding ranger
and local officers found her body and the body of her husband, R.K., inside.
Both had been shot and killed. G.K. had worked for the Service since the
70's, and had been the superintendent's secretary for at least 25 years.
Grief counselors arrived in the park yesterday. The Orange County Sheriff's
Office is conducting the investigation. No further details on the deaths
will be released until the investigators have completed their work. [Sandy

FIRE MANAGEMENT

Park Fire Situation

Great Smoky Mountains NP (NC/TN) - Prescribed fires were conducted in Cades
Cove on March 29th, April 1st and April 2nd. Firefighters successfully
burned 577 acres, bringing the total acreage burned to 777 acres, with
another 38 still to go.
