INCIDENTS

02-503
Cane River Creole National Historical Park (LA)
Follow-up: Hurricane Lili

Due to the imminent arrival of Hurricane Lili, central Louisiana is under an inland hurricane wind warning and flood watch through this evening. Winds in excess of 70 mph with gusts to 90 mph are predicted along with heavy rain. The Louisiana State Police are recommending that all non-essential personnel stay off the highways today. The park has accordingly closed. All emergency preparations were completed yesterday afternoon.

02-507
Glen Canyon National Recreation Area (AZ,UT)
Falling Fatality

Park dispatcher Joe Anderson overhead an SOS call on marine band radio late on the evening of September 25. A member of a group on a houseboat beached at Oak Canyon had contacted dispatch in Window Rock, Arizona, and reported that a man had fallen overboard and was unconscious. Rangers Brian Bloom and Anne Maker responded from Dangling Rope Marina. When they arrived, they found that a paramedic from a nearby boat had begun efforts to resuscitate R.M. of Anaconda, Montana. A medical helicopter from Page also responded. Medical staff on board assessed R.M. and pronounced him dead. R.M. was evidently on the upper level of the houseboat when he fell overboard into Lake Powell, hitting his head along the way. Alcohol may have been a contributing factor.

02-508
Yellowstone National Park (ID,MT,WY)
Assist; Barricaded Suspect

Late on the afternoon of September 28, the Park County Sheriff's Office advised dispatch that deputies were in pursuit of a man near the north boundary of the park and requested NPS assistance. The man had reportedly assaulted a deputy and was believed to be armed. During the brief chase, the man's vehicle became disabled. Rangers and NPS special agents responded and assisted deputies and Montana Highway Patrol officers in an unsuccessful ground search of the area. Early on the morning on September 29, deputies found him hiding in a camper and again asked the park for help. Rangers (including one equipped with a Taser), special agents trained as crisis negotiators, and a Bozeman PD canine unit supported deputies in a standoff of about three hours' duration that resulted in the armed man surrendering peacefully to deputies. He was arrested and booked into the Park County jail.

PARKS AND PEOPLE

Edison National Historic Site (NJ)
Edison's Home Closed for Rehabilitation

Glenmont, Thomas Edison's home in West Orange, New Jersey, has closed for extensive rehabilitation.

The house, part of the Edison National Historic Site, is located in the community of Llewellyn Park, about one mile away from Mr. Edison's Main Street laboratory. It is a 29 rooom Queen Anne style mansion designed by noted architect Henry Hudson Holly.

The house will be fitted with an updated HVAC system to preserve the 25,000 artifacts within its walls, as well as an updated fire detection system and a new fire suppression system.

Two outbuildings, a barn and a greenhouse/gardener's cottage/potting shed will be stabilized. The barn will receive a new slate roof and the greenhouse will get new cypress rails and glass.

Plans are for work to begin late this month and last for nearly two years.

The project is being managed by DSC's Doug Porter. Day-to-day supervision is being provided by Charly Magale, the park's facility managemnet specialist.
