Lyndon B Johnson National Historical Park (TX)
Aircraft Emergency Landing
Pilot B.W. was flying a twin-engine Piper PA-31-350 Navajo
Chieftain with seven passengers on board on the afternoon of November 4
when the left engine began suffering mechanical problems. One of the
passengers saw a puff of white smoke coming from the engine and oil
leaking out from under the cowling. P.W. shut the engine down and
checked his GPS for the location of the nearest airport. That proved to
be the Johnson City airport in the park's LBJ Ranch District. P.W.
tried unsuccessfully to contact air traffic control at San Antonio to
apprise them of his problems; he then called a Southwest Airlines flight
and told them to advise the FAA that he was going to attempt a landing
at Johnson City. P.W. made two passes over the airstrip, then landed
successfully and without either injuries or damage to the plane.
P.W. was flying on instruments at the time due to low clouds, fog
and heavy rain. Park staff helped transport the pilot and passengers -
missionary workers from Oshkosh, Wisconsin, who were being flown to
rural Mexico - to a local motel and assisted in arranging for an
aircraft mechanic to repair the Piper. The mechanic found that a valve
had come apart, causing damage to the engine's pistons. Metal chips were
found in the oil filter. The plane will be repaired on site, then flown
back to Oshkosh to have it's engine rebuilt.
