02-584
Grand Canyon National Park (AZ)
Probable Suicide

On Saturday, November 9, rangers discovered an abandoned vehicle at Mather Point. A search of the area revealed a pile of clothing on a small rock pinnacle just beyond the safety rail at the overlook. A searcher on the rim located what appeared to be a body several hundred feet below the location of the clothing, subsequently confirmed by observers in a park helicopter. Rangers Greg Moore and Bonnie Taylor rappelled to the scene for investigation and recovery. The body was removed by a helicopter long-line operation that involved NPS employees from several park divisions and was conducted during a winter storm. The victim has been tentatively identified as a 35-year-old male from San Diego who had a history of mental problems. The investigation is continuing in conjunction with the Coconino County medical examiner's office. The incident commander is Ira Blitzblau; the primary investigator is Mike Gardiner.

PARKS AND PEOPLE

Gulf Islands National Seashore (FL,MS)
GS-7/9 or GS-9 Park Ranger

The park has posted a vacancy announcement for a protection ranger position in its Mississippi Gulf Coast District. Although there is just one position to be filled, the park has advertised it as both merit promotion (governmentwide and special programs) and all sources. The announcement numbers are GUIS P03-02 (closes December 2) and DEU GUIS 03-01 (closes November 26). The merit promotion announcement is open as a GS-7/9 and the all sources as a GS-9. Applicants need to submit two applications if they want to be considered for both announcements. You can find them on USA Jobs or by calling the park's job line at 850-934-2601 and requesting copies. This is a required occupancy position with government quarters at Davis Bayou on the mainland - a fairly new two-bedroom, two-bath house with a garage in a beautiful wooded area near the bayou. Davis Bayou is in Ocean Springs, near Biloxi.
