INCIDENTS

02-621
Buffalo National River (AR)
Structural Fire

Miller's Cabin, a historical structure within the park, was substantially damaged by a fire on Tuesday, December 3. Most of the structure was saved, although a dog and a fish died in the blaze. Local fire departments responded along with park staff. The structure is owned by the park, but leased to the Gorgas Science Foundation. The building is being rehabilitated, and a new piece of stove pipe for the cabin's wood stove was added to the outside of the chimney on Tuesday. The occupants started a fire in the stove in the afternoon, then departed. The person doing the rehab work lives across the street from the cabin and noticed smoke issuing from the building in the evening. He broke out one of the windows and knocked down most of the fire with a garden hose. It appears that the fire started in the attic and in close proximity to the stove pipe.

02-622
Canyon De Chelly National Monument (AZ)
BASE Jumping

On the morning of November 28, a resident of the canyon called the park by cell phone and reported that ten people had been BASE jumping near the Antelope House ruin in the early hours of the morning. Rangers contacted four of the jumpers. Their parachute packs were seized as evidence, and citations were issued for mandatory appearances on charges of illegal air delivery and trespassing. The investigation continues.
