Man Arrested for Rape in Park
On Saturday, October 29th, a 32-year-old woman from Asheville, North Carolina, was abducted, taken to a spot just north of the French Broad River Bridge, and forcibly raped. A visitor found the partially-clothed woman running south along the parkway, stopped to help her, then notified authorities. The woman was able to provide a description of her assailant and the vehicle he was operating and also described items within the vehicle used during the attack. Rangers and FBI agents began an investigation and arrested a Candler, North Carolina, man on November 22nd. The arrest was based on the descriptions the woman provided and other evidence discovered during the course of the investigation. [Tim Francis, Pisgah District Ranger]

Felony Arrests
On the morning of November 1st, rangers responded to the Boulder Beach Campground to investigate a report of two visitors who had failed to pay camping fees. During the course of the investigation, the rangers determined that the pair had provided them with false information. A search of their vehicle and campsite revealed drug paraphernalia and items associated with identity theft. Further investigation revealed that the items confiscated were associated with numerous crimes that had taken place in the states of Montana and Nevada. The U.S. Secret Service was contacted and both subjects were arrested on felony charges. A joint investigation is underway. [Mary Hinson, Deputy Chief Ranger]

Poaching Arrest
An anonymous park neighbor contacted rangers on November 18th and informed them that a man had been hunting in the northeast section of the park for some time and had possibly shot several deer out of a portable tree stand. Rangers investigated the next day and found a portable tree stand inside the park. Surveillance was begun. At dusk, a man dressed in full camouflage and carrying a rifle walked up to the stand, threw some corn around it, then climbed up the tree to get into the stand. The hunter, also a park neighbor, was cited for possession of a weapon, attempting to take wildlife, and baiting deer. His rifle and tree stand were seized. Maryland Department of Natural Resources also issued warnings for hunting out of season and failing to wear orange. [Holly Rife, Chief Ranger]
