NATIONAL PARK SERVICE MORNING REPORT BLACKBERRY EDITION Wednesday, September 13, 2006 =============================================================================================================== INCIDENTS Acadia NP Climber Rescued After Getting Stuck On Cliff Rangers rescued a climber last Sunday afternoon after he became stuck while free-climbing on the cliffs near Great Head Trail. N.P., 24, of Exeter, New Hampshire, had hiked down to the bottom of the cliffs with friends and begun free-climbing a 50-foot section of the cliff. N.P. got about halfway up the section of cliff when he ran out of handholds and was not able to go either up or down. He was at a spot where he had a good foothold and handhold, though, so was able to hang on until help arrived. He was stuck on the cliff for about 45 minutes. Rangers and the Mount Desert Island search and rescue team members arrived and set up a technical rope system. They lowered a ranger down to the climber and the ranger fitted N.P. with a special climbing harness and attached the harness to the rope system. Rescuers then lowered N.P. and the ranger to ground. N.P. was not injured in the incident. [Bangor Daily News] Canaveral NS Rangers Assist With Shuttle Launch Security Space Shuttle Atlantis was launched from the Kennedy Space Center just after 11 a.m. on September 9th. Rangers assisted in securing an area within the park for NASA cameramen to film the launch. Immediately thereafter, a NASA helicopter landed on site and picked up the film.
