NATIONAL PARK SERVICE MORNING REPORT Monday, February 12, 2007 =============================================================================================================== INCIDENTS New River Gorge NR Suicide From New River Gorge Bridge During the early morning hours of Saturday, February 10th, a Fayetteville City police officer discovered an abandoned vehicle on the New River Gorge Bridge and stopped to investigate. The officer spotted what appeared to be a body on the right bank of the river about 800 feet below. Rangers Sandy Shuck, Randy Fisher and Greg Malcolm responded along with state police, county officers, and fire, rescue and EMS units. The body was recovered and identified as that of a 22-year-old Fayetteville man. An investigation is underway, but all indications are that the death was a suicide. Great Smoky Mountains NP - Rick Brown, assistant chief ranger in the Resource and Visitor Protection Division at Great Smoky Mountains National Park, will wear his flat hat for the last time on March 30th, concluding 29 years as a career park ranger in four parks. Gettysburg NMP - On Wednesday, February 7th, retired interpretive ranger Becky Lyons passed away at Gettysburg Hospital. Antietam NB - The park is currently seeking a GL-025-9 protection ranger with a Type I law enforcement commission interested in a lateral transfer. DSC - The Transportation Division is seeking a GS-0807-23 supervisory landscape architect. Lincoln Memorial - This year's observance of President Lincoln's birthday will take place today at noon at the Lincoln Memorial. Manazanar NHS - The National Baseball Hall of Fame & Museum, The National Park Foundation and Ball State University have again joined together to connect more than 20 million children and community members from all 50 states in a simultaneous virtual visit to Manzanar NHS.
