Off-Duty Ranger Saves Life Of Man Attempting Suicide

On Sunday, April 8th, ranger Brett Spaulding was off-duty and at home when he heard screaming from his neighbor's yard. Spaulding investigated and found that his neighbor had attempted to commit suicide by hanging himself from his deck. He picked up the man while the man's wife got a knife to cut him down. Spaulding directed another neighbor to call 911, freed the man, then began CPR on him with another neighbor's assistance. When paramedics arrived on scene, the man was breathing on his own. He was taken to the hospital and survived his suicide attempt. Spaulding, an interpretive ranger at Monocacy since October, 2001, regularly attends the park's CPR/AED training classes. His quick thinking and response saved the man's life. [Todd Stanton, Chief Ranger]

Fisherman Drowns After Being Swept To Sea

Local resident B.L. drowned on Tuesday, April 10th, while fishing on private lands within the parks' boundaries. B.L. was hit by an unusually large “sneaker” wave while fishing for eel at the mouth of the Klamath River. He was swept to sea, where his body was later found by the Coast Guard. Assisting NPS staff in the search and recovery operation were personnel from the Yurok Public Safety Department and Del Norte County Sheriff's Office. This was the fifth drowning on lands and waters within the boundaries of Redwood National and State Parks since last October. None of the five was wearing a life jacket. Hiker Finds Body Of Apparent Suicide Victim

The body of 48-year-old K.T. of Akron was found by a hiker on the Buckeye Trail early on the morning of Sunday, April 8th. After checking the victim, the hiker returned to the Pine Lane trailhead, flagged down a passing motorist, and reported the incident. The hiker then led rangers, Peninsula police officers and Valley FD personnel down the trail to the scene. Attempts to revive K.T. were not successful. He had reportedly suffered from depression in the past. There's no indication of foul play. Ranger Lois Neff and the Summit County Coroners Office are investigating.
