NATIONAL PARK SERVICE MORNING REPORT Tuesday, April 24, 2007 =============================================================================================================== INCIDENTS Jean Lafitte NHP&P Arrests For Theft, Illegal Dumping On Tuesday, April 9th, rangers on patrol saw some unidentifiable objects in Bayou Coquille in the Barataria Unit and contacted the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office. The sheriff's office dispatched its LASER (Land-Air-Sea-Emergency Rescue) unit to investigate. Divers from that team recovered several computers and related equipment, all of which had been stolen during a burglary at nearby Ellender Middle School in Marrero, Louisiana. Arrests were made shortly thereafter - eight males and females, ranging in age from 13 to 20 years old. Two of the people arrested admitted to dumping stolen items in the park. Federal charges will be pursued for illegal dumping into a waterway. The sheriff's office has filed burglary, obstruction and contributing to the delinquency charges against those arrested. Ranger Michael Callais is the case agent. [John K. Hughes, Chief Ranger] Delaware Water Gap NRA Probable Arson Fire In Vacant House Park dispatch received a call from the Newton PD 911 center just before 8 a.m. on April 18th, advising that the fire chief from Sandyston VFD had received a report of smoke issuing from the unoccupied Gordon House near Walpack Center. The building has been out of use for years and is scheduled for removal. Ranger Brad Clawson responded, arriving just before the VFD engines. A moderate amount of smoke was coming out of the house's windows. Clawson quickly checked the building and determined that there was nobody inside. He employed an extinguisher to retard the spread of the fire, which was burning in the floorboards and floor joists, until firefighters arrived and suppressed the blaze. Two burned areas were found in the house, one near a fireplace and the other near a first floor window. Arson is deemed probable; the investigation continues.
