NATIONAL PARK SERVICE MORNING REPORT Friday, May 4, 2007 =============================================================================================================== INCIDENTS Blue Ridge Parkway Man Sentenced Following Drug Distribution Conviction On April 30th, F.S. was sentenced in federal court to 21 years and 10 months in federal prison, followed by 10 years probation, for distribution of 50 grams or more of crack cocaine. F.S. pled guilty in a negotiated plea agreement in order to avoid a potential life sentence under federal sentencing guidelines due to his criminal history. During a DUI checkpoint conducted with the Grayson County sheriff's office last November, F.S. made a U-turn to avoid being checked and fled down the parkway. Rangers Greg Johnston and Ryan Parr pursued F.S.'s Jeep Cherokee for about 15 miles before Carroll County deputies deflated three of the Cherokee's tires by placing ‘stop sticks' on the roadway. The chase nonetheless continued for another two miles, as F.S. continued to drive on the vehicle's rims. He then stopped, bailed out, and fled on foot. Rangers and deputies chased him for about a half mile through a pasture before bringing him down with a taser and placing him under arrest. F.S. was found to have 50 grams of crack cocaine, 125 grams of cocaine, digital scales, baggies and crack cooking material in his possession. AUSA Zachary Lee was the prosecuting attorney and Greg Johnston was the NPS case agent.
