NATIONAL PARK SERVICE MORNING REPORT Friday, September 28, 2007 =============================================================================================================== INCIDENTS Haleakala NP Ohio Woman Killed In Cycling Accident A 65-year-old Ohio woman who was bicycling down the mountain as part of a Maui Mountain Cruisers tour group evidently lost control of her bike, crossed into the oncoming lane, and was hit by a van from another tour group. Both the bike and woman came to rest underneath the van and trailer. The accident occurred on a hairpin curve about 50 yards above park headquarters and was observed by a number of visitors in the headquarters area. The emergency response was immediate. Rangers responded with life support equipment and found a physician from another tour treating her when they arrived. The rangers established an airway, administered oxygen, and began CPR. They sustained it until an AMR ambulance arrived and paramedics took over. Following consultation with a doctor, they eventually suspended resuscitation efforts and pronounced her dead at the scene. Witnesses and family members were cared for in the park and interviewed. A chaplain familiar with critical incident stress helped everyone involved. An investigation is ongoing. [Mark Tanaka-Sanders, Chief Ranger; Dominic Cardea, Public Affairs Officer] Biscayne NP Fatal Diving Accident Ranger Dider Carod was on patrol in Biscayne Bay around midday on Sunday, September 23rd, when he got a call from dispatch advising him that a vessel was en route to Boca Chita Key with a diving accident victim on board. The man was not breathing and CPR was in progress. When Carod arrived at the key, he found the victim on the ground with a blanket over him. Coral Gables PD marine units had arrived a few minutes before him and determined that the man had already died. Miami-Dade police and fire/rescue units soon joined them. Paramedics confirmed that he was deceased. When questions, the man's companion said that the two of them had been diving in about 55 feet of water when the victim suddenly removed his dive belt and equipment and quickly ascended to the surface. He followed and found that the man was already unconscious. Miami-Dade homicide investigators took the body and are currently investigating the incident. The victim's dive equipment was not recovered.
