Update On Flood Recovery

On Tuesday, February 12th, New Mexico DOT crews began temporary repairs to open the West Fork Bridge, dumping an estimated 800 cubic yards of material that will be needed to fill the 32-foot gap between the north end of the bridge and the roadway beyond it. Expectations were that work would be completed by Wednesday evening and the park hopes to be able to open the cliff dwellings on Thursday. Work is being hampered due to a shortage of dump trucks, as other work is ongoing in the southwest part of the state and the haul is some eight miles away over narrow, winding mountain roads with grades as steep as ten per cent. On Wednesday, park staff began debris cleanup and the pumping of vault toilets that were filled with flood waters on January 28th. During that flood, as much as a foot of water was flowing through the trailhead parking area as the Gila River set a new record flow for that date of 14,500 cubic foot per second at the Redrock gauging station.
