NATIONAL PARK SERVICE MORNING REPORT Monday, January 24, 2011 INCIDENTS Acadia NP Nighttime Skier Dies On Park Carriage Road D.R., 52, of Mount Desert, Maine, died while cross country skiing in the park last Saturday night. According to D.R.'s wife, he left home shortly before 10 p.m. on Saturday evening to ski the Eagle Lake loop of the park's carriage roads and was expected to return home in about an hour. When he failed to return home by midnight, his family became concerned and began a search for him. They searched for several hours, then contacted Bar Harbor PD just before 4 a.m. The park was notified shortly thereafter and rangers began a hasty search of carriage roads by snowmobile. They were soon joined by volunteers from Mount Desert Island Search and Rescue and Friends of Acadia volunteers who searched on skis, on snowshoes, and by snowmobile. D.R.'s body was found around 6:45 a.m. by Stuart West, the park's chief ranger, on the Paradise Hill section of the carriage road system. The cause of death has not been determined. Included in today's summary are House and Senate hearings on the Deepwater Horizon oil spill and three new bills introduced in the House.
