INCIDENTS


Great Smoky Mountains NP

Construction Worker Injured On Foothills Parkway Project


At about 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, March 16th, J.L.P., 23, of Bessemer City, North Carolina, was struck by a rock measuring approximately four feet by two feet by two feet that rolled about 20 feet down a steep slope and landed on him. J.L.P. was clearing brush from the right-of-way along a section of the Foothills Parkway, which is under construction about ten miles east of Walland in Blount County. Rangers responded along with Blount County Sheriff's Office deputies and members of the Blount County Rescue Squad, Blount County Fire Department, and Blount Special Operations Response Team. J.L.P. was stabilized and lowered about 20 feet, then carried to a Rural Metro Ambulance. He was subsequently transferred to a Lifestar helicopter, which flew him to the University of Tennessee Medical Center. He was treated for minor injuries and released. Construction on the parkway is being carried out under by a Federal Highway Administration contractor, Lane Construction of Charlotte, North Carolina. J.L.P. is an employee of Phillips and Jordan Construction, a subcontractor of Lane Construction.
An investigation of the mishap is being carried out by the National Park Service, the Federal Highway Administration and the contractors. [Bob Miller, Public Affairs Officer]


New River Gorge NR

Two Men Caught Stealing Railroad Tie Plates


Ranger Stan Wilson saw two men leaving the Cole Lot in a hurry with a truckload of CSX rail system HYPERLINK "http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tie_plate" "Tie_plates" tie plates (the railway runs through the park). Wilson called for backup and pulled the truck over. Rangers Peggy Brown and Karl Keach were soon on scene. Both men in the truck were found to have significant criminal histories for fraud and theft offenses. A total of 132 tie plates were found in the truck bed, which the men admitted they intended to sell for scrap. Coordination with CSX Police has placed the monetary value of the plates at over $1000. The investigation continues and felony theft charges will be sought. [Jeff West, Chief Ranger]


Yellowstone NP

Felon Convicted, Sentenced For Possession Of Loaded Firearm


During a traffic stop on July 17, 2009, Yellowstone rangers determined that the passenger in the vehicle, S.S. of Altus, Oklahoma, had six prior felony convictions on his record - and that he was in possession of a loaded firearm. The subsequent investigation revealed that he was a leader of the Bloods street gang in Altus. A federal grand jury issued an indictment charging S.S. with violating the federal law prohibiting felons from possessing firearms (18 USC § 922(g)). S.S., who had been released on bond, was subsequently apprehended during a traffic stop in Oklahoma and was returned to the District of Wyoming. On September 7, 2010, S.S. plead guilty to the charge filed against him. On November 17, 2010, U. S. District Judge he was sentenced to 51 months of imprisonment, a $200 fine, and three years' probation. [Investigative Services Branch]

Cape Lookout NS - Cape Lookout is looking for permanent mainland homes for six relocated “Banker” horses, members of a herd descended from Colonial Spanish horses that still runs wild on Shackleford Banks. The horses have been removed to control the population there.

Yosemite NP - The Ahwahnee Hotel reopened yesterday after a three week shutdown to permit extensive renovations. Restaurants, shops, public spaces, and most of the guest rooms have reopened to the public.

Albright Training Center - Laura Congdon has transferred to the center from the National Archives and is now developing and conducting training for new employees in the Washington, D.C. area. Photo.

Albright Training Center - Albright Training Center has welcomed Jason Kesterson to its staff. He will have a variety of IT systems administration, telecommunications, and audio-visual duties at the center. Photo.
