Search In Progress For Missing Boater

Rangers are searching for a boater who's been missing since Tuesday evening and was last seen in the water without a lifejacket near Callville Bay. He and two other men were boating just outside the bay, with two men in the boat and the third being towed on an inflatable raft. The man on the raft decided to come in, so his companions stopped the boat to pick him up. One of the men in the boat then jumped into the lake to pull the raft in. He needed assistance, so the boat driver jumped in as well. While they were in the water, both the boat and raft drifted away. The man who was on the inflatable was the only one with a lifejacket. He took it off to share, but by then the boat driver has drifted away. The park received a report about the three missing men around 7:30 p.m. and responded with two boats. Two of the men were rescued by a passing boat and brought in to Callville Bay. They were not injured. The search for the missing man continues. [Andrew S. Munoz, Public Affairs Officer]

Man Pleads Guilty To Felony Theft Charges

During June and July of 2010, Cliff Park Inn, the maintenance facility for its golf course, and the golf course superintendent's residence were all broken into and tools and jewelry were stolen. The total estimated value of the stolen items was placed at nearly $60,000. The thefts were investigated by a ranger and a Northeast ISB special agent. On January 19th, they arrested M.T. for the thefts. M.T. was remanded until disposition of the case. On May 25th, he pled guilty to two felony theft counts under 18 USC ยง 661 and was sentenced to four months incarceration, restitution in the amount of $30,000, and two years supervised release. The restitution amount was agreed upon because of an inability to obtain current appraisal values for the jewelry. Cliff Park Inn is operated under a historic lease with the park. Long Island Man Drowns In River

On the afternoon of May 28th, a 71-year-old Long Island man was reported missing after he fell from his raft while boating on the Upper Delaware River in an area called Butler's Rift. He was not wearing a lifejacket at the time and was seen going under the water by his wife. National Canoe Safety Patrol (NCSP) members were on patrol in the area and immediately notified the NPS and began a hasty search. Park staff responded along with Delaware Water Gap's dive rescue team and dive teams from the Sparrowbush, Port Jervis, Matamoras and Westfall fire departments. A point last seen was determined and dive operations began. They were hampered by high water and poor visibility and suspended on Saturday, but resumed on Sunday and Monday. No sign of the missing man was found until around 8 p.m. on Sunday evening when dispatch at Delaware Water Gap received a call from boaters reporting a body floating in the river near the Dingmans Ferry Bridge. The body was recovered and found to be that of the missing man. The river had carried it about 25 miles from the point last seen. [Joe Hinkes, Chief Ranger]
