Manassas NBP - A large crowd gathered in the park yesterday to mark the solemn anniversary of the Battle of First Manassas. Director Jarvis joined other dignitaries in commemorating the first major battle of the Civil War, which took place on July 21, 1861. Photo.


Lake Roosevelt NRA - This year marks the bicentennial of fur trader, surveyor, and mapmaker David Thompson's journey down the Columbia River. For six weeks this summer, over 100 hardy adventurers paddled canoes along the route, including a section of Lake Roosevelt. Photo.


Grand Canyon NP - William Yavorsky, 34, a National Park Service employee stationed at Grand Canyon National Park, passed away on Wednesday, July 20th, after a heroic battle with cancer. Photo.


NPS Alumni - Paul Larson, who began working for the NPS as a seasonal naturalist at Rocky Mountain in the 50s and retired in the mid-90s, passed away last week. Photo.


Denver Service Center - Susan Walsh will serve as the new DSC training coordinator and employee development specialist. Photo.


Servicewide Training Calendar - A compilation of upcoming training courses and conferences across the nation, plus online training.  Added to this week's calendar are the following - a new online training course on the fundamentals of financial management, three new Fundamentals II offerings, several NREMT basic and refresher courses, workshops on NPS resource law and policy and on interpreting the Civil War prior to the ANPR conference/rendezvous in October, and a regional wilderness stewardship course in Tennessee.
