NATIONAL PARK SERVICE MORNING REPORT Tuesday, August 16, 2011 INCIDENTS Rocky Mountain NP Injured Climber Rescued From Longs Peak The park received a cell phone call on Saturday afternoon reporting that a 44-year-old man had fallen about 15 feet and suffered a lower leg injury while climbing roped on Kiener's Route on Longs Peak. The man's climbing partner and four other climbers in the area assisted the man, helping him to get to the top of Lamb's Slide, where rangers met them. They employed a tandem rappel and lowering operation to get him down to Mills Glacier. He was then flown to Saint Anthony Hospital. Six rangers were involved in the rescue operation. [Kyle Patterson, Public Affairs Specialist] Lake Mead NRA Man Drowns In Newberry Cove A 49-year-old California man drowned while visiting Newberry Cove with his wife and friends on Sunday afternoon. Matthew Santistevan went wading in the lake after the group had beached their boat in the cove. His friends noticed he was missing a few minutes later and found him in six to ten feet of water. They pulled him ashore, began CPR and called the park via marine radio. Rangers and medics soon arrived. They continued CPR and employed advanced life saving techniques, but without success.
