NATIONAL PARK SERVICE MORNING REPORT Tuesday, October 11, 2011 INCIDENTS Biscayne NP Man Killed At Columbus Day Weekend Event Due to severe weather (25 to 30 mph winds and heavy rain), only 200 to 300 boats showed up for the annual Columbus Day weekend event at Biscayne this year. One man was killed when his legs were severed by the propeller of a large boat that he'd been riding on. [Mark Lewis, Superintendent] Glen Canyon NRA Houseboat Severely Damaged In Fire Park dispatch received a call reporting a boat fire at the Wahweap Marina just before 2 a.m. on October 7th. Park firefighters responded by boat and were supported by firefighters from Page Fire Department. The blaze was soon brought under control. The houseboat, though salvageable, suffered extensive damage. The fire had reached extremely high temperatures inside the boat before flames became visible. No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire is under investigation by the NPS. Ranger Shawn McNally was IC. Office of Communications - A memorial service for former National Park Service Director Roger G. Kennedy will take place at 2 p.m. on Saturday, November 5th, in Washington, DC. Pacific West Region - Three California state parks on that state's closure list will be kept open through an agreement reached with the NPS -- Tomales Bay State Park, Samuel P. Taylor State Park, and Del Norte Coast Redwoods State Park. Office of Legislative and Congressional Affairs - This week's update on past and upcoming hearings and the status of legislation of interest to the National Park Service.
