NATIONAL PARK SERVICE MORNING REPORT Monday, December 5, 2011 INCIDENTS Blue Ridge Parkway Three Men Convicted In Separate Ginseng Poaching Cases Three people were arrested separately in September for digging ginseng along the parkway. On December 1st, Thomas Jones pled guilty to possessing 12 roots and was sentenced to five days in jail, J.H. pled guilty to possessing 167 roots and was sentenced to 30 days in jail, and Delmar J.H. pled guilty to possessing 103 roots and was sentenced to 50 days in jail. J.H. was arrested with 138 ginseng roots in his possession in 2009 by the same ranger involved in this case. He served 30 days in jail for that offense. The release marked another step in efforts to protect this endangered species. Legislative and Congressional Affairs - This week's update on past and upcoming hearings, newly introduced bills, and the status of legislation of interest to the National Park Service. This summary covers the period from November 19th to December 2nd. Learning and Development Division - Jane Anderson, deputy fee collection program manager, was presented the Crystal Owl Award for Training & Development Excellence (Outstanding Individual Effort) on November 30th. Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania NMP - Ranger Chuck Lochart will hang up his flat hat on December 9th after nearly three decades with the National Park Service.
