NATIONAL PARK SERVICE MORNING REPORT Tuesday, December 20, 2011 INCIDENTS Hot Springs NP Man Convicted On Drug Possession Charge Ranger Clint Forte contacted G.E. and D.P. in the Gulpha Gorge campground for fee violations last January 29th. A few moments later, G.E. fled, leaving D.P. behind with a vehicle, a stolen 9mm handgun, scales, and a distribution amount of marijuana. D.P. immediately seized the handgun from the vehicle and attempted to dispose of it in a nearby creek. After a foot pursuit, Forte and local officers captured G.E. and later recovered the firearm from the creek. With the assistance of an NPS special agent, G.E. and D.P. were charged in federal court. D.P. later confessed to the agent of interference and G.E.'s motive in possession of the marijuana and handgun. G.E. pled to one count under 21 USC 841 on September 14th. On December 6th, he was sentenced to three months in jail, assessed court costs, and placed on three years' supervised probation. D.P. is to be sentenced later. The recovered handgun was found to have been taken in a burglary about a month prior and will be returned to the legal owner.
