NATIONAL PARK SERVICE MORNING REPORT Tuesday, January 31, 2012 INCIDENTS Amistad NRA Maintenance Employees Save Visitor's Life Park maintenance division employees Jeff Larsen, Charlie Medina and Robert Trevino have been credited with saving the life of a Canadian visitor who was staying in the park. On the afternoon of January 25th, Larsen saw a man down on the ground next to an RV and ran to him. When the man did not respond to attempts to revive him, Larsen began CPR. He was soon joined by Medina and they began two-person CPR. As instructed by responding protection ranger Steve Krisko, Trevino retrieved an AED from a nearby contact station, returned to the scene, and prepared it for use. The three NPS employees then employed the AED to shock the victim. Larsen and Medina then continued CPR. They used the AED one more time and shortly thereafter the man began to breathe on his own. He was transported by ambulance to the Val Verde Regional Medical Center and then to a hospital in San Antonio the following day. To see the full text, including images, NPS employees should go to the InsideNPS home page ( HYPERLINK "http://inside.nps.gov/index.cfm?handler=index" http://inside.nps.gov/index.cfm?handler=index). Non-NPS employees can see most of them on the NPS Digest page ( HYPERLINK "http://home.nps.gov/applications/digest/" http://home.nps.gov/applications/digest/): Gettysburg NMP - The several lots at the park's visitor center, despite their capacity, can completely fill on busy summer days. This year, the park will test a solution to the problem - a “Smart Parking” system that will direct traffic to a nearby mall and then convey visitors to Gettysburg via a free trolley. Theodore Roosevelt NP - The park recently concluded the second year of a major elk reduction program in accordance with an elk management plan/EIS that was finalized in 2010. Unlike ungulate reduction efforts in other parks, this program utilizes a large number of volunteers with firearms as the primary reduction tool. Office of Communications - The 2012 "Connect Trails to Parks" awards will provide a total of $934,000 to 14 projects where national historic and scenic trails intersect with national parks and other federal facilities. Office of Information Resources - Tax season is upon us. Employees are reminded that their income tax forms are key documents which contain PII (personally identifiable information) that needs to be protected. Big Bend NP - Joseph F. De Monte, 57, chief of administrative services at Big Bend National Park, passed away on Monday, January 23rd. * * * * The Morning Report is a publication of the Division of Law Enforcement, Security and Emergency Services, Washington Office, produced with the support of the Office of the Assistant Director for Information Resources and the Office of the Chief Information Officer.
