Woman Arrested For Methamphetamine Possession

On the morning of Sunday, March 25th, the on-duty ranger in the park's Middle Buffalo District saw a man and woman collecting rocks and placing them into the bed of a pickup truck at the Grinders Ferry river access area. Rangers who contacted the pair saw the woman making furtive movements, as if trying to hide something; she was also acting very nervous, fidgeting, muttering, scratching herself, and shuffling her feet. As the ranger was talking with her, she removed a syringe from her shirt pocket and threw it on the ground. The ranger frisked her for weapons and while doing so observed fresh needle tracks on her arm. Moments later, field training ranger Todd Garrett and field trainee Paul Chalup (stationed at Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore) arrived on scene and searched the pickup. During their search, they located several small bundles of methamphetamine (later weighing out at four grams), additional syringes, and other drug paraphernalia. Chalup took the woman into custody and told her she was under arrest for possession of methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia. The Searcy County Sheriff's Office agreed to take the lead role in the case and transported her to Searcy County Jail, where she awaits state prosecution. She was also issued a verbal warning for collecting rocks. [Kevin Moses, Middle Buffalo District Ranger]

Body Found On Park Shoreline

Ranger Greg Wozniak was on foot patrol checking archaeological sites along the Hudson River on the afternoon of March 28th when he spotted what appeared to be human remains in the river. New York State Police were notified and arrived on scene soon after. Ranger and maintenance staff assisted detectives with the recovery of the body, using the park's johnboat. The remains appeared to have been in the river for some time prior to their discovery. The deceased has been identified as a 38-year-old man who was reported missing on November 23rd of last year and was last seen in Albany. He was a college student there and was employed at the Hilton Garden Inn across from the school at the time of his disappearance. The deceased was dressed in winter-type clothing and was found 20 feet from the shoreline, tangled in sunken trees. [Greg Wozniak, Chief Ranger]
