ATV Rider
Survives Accident In Park ORV Area
On Saturday, May 12th, emergency responders were called to the Rosita
Flats off-road vehicle area for an ATV rollover. The operator, a
15-year-old boy, was described as unconscious and unresponsive. He was
trying to jump a small hill in the ORV area but was going too fast,
causing the ATV to vault upon landing and throwing him about 40 feet.
Potter County deputies were first on scene; they were soon joined by
Potter County Fire and Amarillo Emergency Medical Services personnel.
Basic life support measures were administered and a Life Star medical
helicopter was ordered. The boy was flown to an area hospital. A ranger
arrived on scene nearly 40 minutes after the initial call due to the
long drive and began an investigation. The boy was wearing a helmet at
the time of the accident, which saved his life. A follow-up with
his parents revealed that he was in good health and ready to get back on
his ATV.

FIRE MANAGEMENT
NIFC/NPS Fire and Aviation Management
National Fire/Incident Situation Highlights
National Fire Activity - Preparedness Level 1
NIFC is at PL 1. Initial attack was light on Monday. Eight large fires are burning nationwide, primarily in Arizona and Colorado.
Fire Weather Forecast
Monday's forecast - A broad ridge will remain in place over the western U.S. while a trough deepens in the eastern half of the country. Temperatures will continue warming over most of the Intermountain West. A low drifting under the ridge will increase winds across the southern Great Basin which, coupled with high temperatures and low relative humidity, will produce critical fire weather conditions in southern Nevada and southwestern Utah. Isolated afternoon thunderstorms are possible across parts of the Northwest. High pressure will usher in cooler weather across the Plains while lingering cold fronts across the Great Lakes and the East coast will produce scattered showers and thunderstorms in the upper Mississippi Valley and from northeastern Georgia to Maine. In Alaska, scattered showers will develop in the eastern Interior while rain approaches the Southwest. The rest of the state will be cool and mainly dry.

Northeast Region
Celeste Bernardo Named Superintendent Of Lowell NHP
Northeast Regional Director Dennis Reidenbach has selected 25-year NPS veteran Celeste Bernardo as the new superintendent of Lowell National Historical Park. Slated to begin June 18th, Bernardo succeeds Michael Creasey, who became the superintendent of Marsh-Billings -Rockefeller National Historical Park earlier this year.
"Celeste Bernardo's experience in fostering collaborative and adaptive partnerships with communities and partners at both the national and local levels made her the ideal choice for this position," said Reidenbach. "Her exemplary skills in the fields of interpretation and education will serve to further develop the outstanding and innovative programs at Lowell National Historical Park. "
"Lowell National Historical Park is a national model for its educational and cultural programming and engagement, historic preservation, and economic development," said Bernardo. "This is due to the shared vision and leadership of the park and its government, education, business and non-profit partners. I am honored to continue this commitment to innovation and look forward to working collaboratively to serve the Lowell community and the nation. "
No stranger to Lowell, Bernardo worked at the park from 1992 to 1995 as a supervisory park ranger and has called Massachusetts home in a host of other NPS assignments. Most recently, Bernardo served as deputy superintendent at Boston National Historical and Boston African American National Historic Site. Prior to that, she served as superintendent at New Bedford Whaling National Historical Park. She has also worked for the private, non-profit USS Constitution Museum located at the Charlestown Navy Yard in Boston National Historical Park.
From 2001 to 2003, she served as the museum's director of education and interpretation. In 2003, the museum earned the National Award for Museum and Library Service, awarded by First Lady Laura Bush, to recognize the museum's commitment to public service through exemplary and innovative programs and community partnerships. She has also served on the Department of the Interior's Partnership and Collaborative Action Team and currently sits on the National Park Service Education Council.
Bernardo began her career with the National Park Service in 1986, working as an interpreter at Fire Island National Seashore, Point Reyes National Seashore, and Independence National Historical Park . She advanced through her career working in interpretation and education leadership positions at a number of parks, including San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park, Golden Gate National Recreation Area, Lowell National Historical Park, Boston National Historical Park, and Sagamore Hill National Historic Site.
Bernardo also served as the partnership training specialist at the NPS Stephen T. Mather Training Center, where she initiated the NPS's partnership training and development program for NPS employees.
A native of Long Island, Bernardo holds a BA in recreation and leisure studies and an MA in American history from Northeastern University. She is a graduate of the Munson Institute of Maritime Studies at Mystic Seaport. Bernardo and her husband and daughter reside in Sharon, Massachusetts.
