Stolen Vehicle Crashes As Driver Flees From Park

A plainclothes ranger working in the Marin Headlands on the afternoon of June 7th spotted a stolen vehicle. The four people inside matched the general description of suspects in a series of auto larcenies that had been reported in the area. The car left the area and headed toward the Golden Gate Bridge. When the driver saw a parked, marked ranger patrol vehicle near the bridge's onramp, he panicked and tried to flee toward Sausalito. Within a mile, he lost control of the stolen vehicle and hit a light pole, sheering it off at its base; the car then rolled over and ended up on its roof. Rangers arrived on the scene and apprehended two people attempting to get out of the car. The other two had to be extracted from the totaled vehicle, one of them with a HYPERLINK "http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jaws_of_Life" hydraulic rescue tool. Investigation revealed that the car had been stolen in Saint Helena, California, and that the three juveniles and one adult inside were from the Napa area. Two had life-threatening injuries and underwent surgery; the driver was arrested and booked for DUI with injuries and possession of a stolen auto; the fourth occupant was medically cleared and also taken into custody. Ailing Woman Rescued From River

River patrol rangers contacted the occupants of a private raft that had flipped in the rapid on the New River on the afternoon of Saturday, June 9th. Two of the passengers were in their 70's and did not take the swim very well. One of them, a 73-year-old woman, was complaining of shortness of breath. Rangers evaluated the woman, who said that she did not want to continue the trip. She reported that she had three cardiac stents and that she'd had a heart attack in 2007. She was also diabetic. Rangers organized the evacuation and continued to monitor her. Additional rangers responded to the area to assist with the evacuation. The raft and other gear were carried out at the fisherman's access, while the woman and husband were taken to a local hospital for further examination. [Jeff West, Chief Ranger]

Rangers Successfully Intervene In Suicide Attempt

On Sunday, June 10th, learned that a suicidal woman was parked in the Canyon Rim parking lot near the New River Gorge Bridge. The 40-year-old Virginia woman had called a suicide hotline in her home state. Counselors were able to determine her location and called the Fayette County 911 center. Rangers Frank Sellers and Randy Fisher were dispatched and located the woman in the parking lot, still sitting in her car. They were able to convince her to seek help and evaluation. She was transferred to a local hospital by Jan Care Ambulance and placed under a psychiatric evaluation hold. Family members arrived early on Monday morning and she was released to their care.
