NATIONAL PARK SERVICE MORNING REPORT Wednesday, September 12, 2012 INCIDENTS United States Park Police Horse Mounted Unit Assists At Democratic National Convention The Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Department, as the hosting city for the recent Democratic National Convention, asked that the US Park Police Horse Mounted Patrol Unit assist them with the protection of their citizens and city. The unit was recommended to them as the premier horse mounted unit in the United States for crowd control. Due to the Park Police mission to protect and patrol the parks and icons in the Washington metropolitan area, it was not possible to send the 20 requested officers and horses, but USPP did provide 10 officers and their mounts. Other mounted units came from Atlanta and Richmond. The mission of these units during the convention was to provide high profile patrol as a deterrent to civil disobedience and to provide the citizens and visitors to Charlotte a sense of security and safety. Due to effective planning by the Charlotte Mecklenburg PD, the majority of demonstrators were peaceful and only a few violations occurred. The horse mounted units were therefore not utilized in a crowd control capacity.
