INCIDENTS

Eastern Areas

Recovery Operations Continue As Nor'easter Passes

The National Park Service incident management team overseeing Hurricane Sandy recovery efforts in New York and New Jersey continued its work yesterday. Specialized support crews are continuing their work supporting employee emergency needs, conducting damage assessments, and removing debris in the affected areas.  Currently, there are 320 National Park Service employees from 101 parks and 38 states, Puerto Rico, and the District of Columbia working with the incident management team.

The following reports were submitted on yesterday's activities:

Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island - The Cape Cod saw crew and park maintenance staff continued debris removal, filling two dumpsters. A 30 yard dumpster was requested. Some power has been restored to the statue's base.

Governors Island - Power has been turned on and a crew has been ordered with specialized equipment to repair the pedestrian dock.  A request for an arborist to inspect trees that were damaged within the park has also been made. All assessments have been completed.

Hamilton Grange - The site remains closed due to a heating equipment issue which is not related to Hurricane Sandy.

Grant's Tomb - A shed that was destroyed during Hurricane Sandy has been secured and a crew has been ordered to break down and remove it.

St. Paul's Church - The site remains open to the public; a crew from Natchez Trace Parkway processed the last downed branches yesterday. A chipper crew has been requested to chip and haul away the processed wood.

African Burial Ground, Federal Hall, and Theodore Roosevelt Birthplace - The sites have no assessed damage and will attempt to reopen this weekend pending the ability of staff to reach the sites.

Castle Clinton and Security Check Point Tent at Battery Park - The site hass no power, phone or internet service, but damage is minimal.  Debris removal inside the security tent will begin today.

Gateway - Three light towers were brought the Riis Park bathhouse and another to Floyd Bennett Field to permit extended work hours. Today, Fort Tilden will receive a chipper to chip wood debris, the New York Police Department heliport will be cleared, and the team will work on fencing at North 40 at Floyd Bennett Field. Five thousand interagency relief workers are now based at the field. A tree was found on the roof of one of the buildings at Millers Field and will require a bucket truck to remove. The tree has punched a hole in the roof of the building. Great Kills Park was assessed for sand movement and sand removal needs. Crews working in the Sandy Hook Unit are regrouping in preparation for continued cleanup following the recent nor'easter.

Fire Island and Sagamore Hill - Crews have returned to cleaning up debris along the shore following the nor'easter's passage.

Morristown - The park will be closed until further notice. Crews continue debris cleanup.

Edison - Crews have returned to cleaning up debris.

Social media remain active. Visitation to the Facebook site has been reached nearly 30,556 individuals to date. The Twitter site continues to re-tweet incoming information from the parks and other agencies. A growing Flickr library now has photographs available for the public and media.

Park Staff Respond To Two Motorcycle Accidents

On September 29th, park personnel responded to a motorcycle crash inside the park on Highway 62 West. The operator of the motorcycle sustained a dislocated shoulder, broken ankle, and various abrasions and lacerations; the passenger, who sustained a concussion and a spiral femur fracture, was flown to a Medford hospital by Mercy Air. The next day, close to the scene of the first accident, another motorcycle also crashed on Highway 62 West. The passenger on this motorcycle also sustained a femur fracture along with a hip fracture, a broken tibia and fibula, and other injuries. The operator had multiple abrasions but refused care. The passenger was flown by Mercy Flight to a hospital in Medford. The operators were each charged with unsafe operation, with speed being a contributing factor in both crashes. This has been a record year for EMS incidents involving major trauma and illness at Crater Lake National Park. To date, there have been eight medical evacuation flights with at least five critically ill or injured persons whose lives were likely saved by prompt EMS response, professional care, and rapid transport to area hospitals.
