INCIDENTS

Eastern Areas

Hurricane Response Management Transitioning To New IMT

Recovery operations continue in New York City area parks. The Pacific West IMT will assume management of the incident tomorrow, replacing the Intermountain IMT. At present, there are 306 National Park Service employees from 99 parks supporting recovery efforts.

Today's report is as follows (if a park or site is not listed, that's because there's no new information to report):

Statue of Liberty - Electricians switched over the power for the statue's lights from a generator to the island's power system.

Ellis Island - Contractors are working on hazard mitigation work planning.

Morristown - Chipping and debris removal continue.

Fire Island - Crews are restoring the maintenance garage in Patchogue and the Lighthouse Annex.

Gateway - A cultural resource advisor worked on mapping wrecked boats and coordinating upcoming board removals. The following actions were also reported at park units:

Fort Tilden - Road and trail operations, building utility repairs, and sand redistribution continued.

Jacob Riis Park - Road and trail clearing and sand redistribution continued.

Great Kills - Debris removal operations and sand redistribution continued.

Miller Field - Debris removal operations and sand redistribution continued.

Fort Wadsworth - Debris removal continued at Seabee Park.

Sandy Hook - Debris removal from road sides and beach plazas continued, as did replacement of oil tank gauges and the construction and placement of shutters on exposed windows and doors on buildings at Fort Hancock.

Eastern Areas - On Monday, for the first time since Hurricane Sandy hit, the evening spotlights which illuminate the Statue of Liberty were taken off generators and reconnected to Liberty Island's power system.

Indiana Dunes NL - More than 150 scientists, researchers, and members of the public attended the conference on November 28th entitled “Linking Research to Management at Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore in a Rapidly Changing Environment.”

Office of International Affairs - PARKS, the International Journal of Protected Areas and Conservation, had a successful re-launching at the World Conservation Congress in September. The magazine is now accepting contributions for its next edition.

Denver Service Center - David Ballard will be retiring on December 28th after 37 years with the NPS. David is currently a project manager at the Denver Service Center.

Interpretation and Education Division - Mike Whatley was presented with a Sequoia Award at the National Association of Interpretation's recent national workshop in Hampton, Virginia.
