Fire Island NS
Man Arrested For Breaking Into Park Headquarters
An alarm monitoring company contacted the park just before 5 a.m. last Sunday and reported that the alarm in the headquarters building in Patchogue had been triggered. Ranger Steve Olijnyk responded and found that a second floor window at the top of a fire escape had been broken. Believing there might be someone inside, Olijnyk called the Suffolk County Police Department for backup. A county canine unit and Patchogue Village public safety officers responded. A decision was made that the dog would enter the building to conduct a search while other officers maintained a perimeter. Olijnyk remained on the first floor. The dog alerted his handler to an office on the second floor, where B.R., 37, was found and arrested. B.R. claimed to be homeless and said that he was looking for a place to sleep. A search of the building revealed that he had gone through several of the offices, but not caused much damage. It was also evident that he'd attempted to break several other windows before finding the one through which he eventually entered. He was transported to Brookhaven Memorial Hospital under guard, where he was treated for the injuries caused by dog bites. He was issued mandatory appearance citations for trespassing and vandalism of property and was released to the hospital's care for a psychiatric evaluation. [Lena Koschmann, Chief Ranger]
