Hawaii Volcanoes NP

Local Man's Body Found In Parked Truck


On January 12th, a resident of Hilo was found dead in his vehicle alongside Highway 11 in the park. A ranger found the body of the 43-year-old man in his truck. A death investigation is underway. The park has asked that anyone who noticed anything suspicious with the truck from the evening of January 11th to the morning of January 12th call park dispatch. [Gail Minami-Judd]


Great Basin NP

Suicide Victim Found In Vehicle


A park visitor reported an unresponsive male in a vehicle parked at Upper Lehman to the staff at the Lehman Caves Visitor Center on January 18th. Responding rangers found the body of a 29-year-old man from Wisconsin with a gunshot wound to the head. A handgun was found in the vehicle. The investigation is continuing, with the White Pine County Sheriff's Department as the lead agency. [T. Henderson, Chief Ranger]

Petrified Forest NP - Thirty-five years after the first draft was begun, Petrified Forest National Park has its first published geological map. The new map includes an eighteen page report summarizing the park's geology, with a colorful cross section of the park geology and photographs of key rock outcrops.

Cabrillo NM - Cabrillo National Monument is kicking off its centennial year with participation in several parades in San Diego and the Southern California region.

Office of Communications - The National Park Service has awarded more than $1.8 million in grants to help with 310.79 acres of land acquisition at six Civil War battlefields. 

Pacific West Region - Kathy Billings has been selected as the new superintendent of Death Valley National Park. She will assume her new responsibilities in mid-March.

Servicewide Training Calendar - Added to this week's calendar are announcements for a law enforcement refresher in Carlsbad, New Mexico, and a motorboat operator instructor certification course at Lake Mead.
