OTHER NEWS

The following stories are among those in today's edition of InsideNPS. To see the full text, including images, NPS employees should go to the InsideNPS home page ( HYPERLINK "http://inside.nps.gov/index.cfm?handler=index" http://inside.nps.gov/index.cfm?handler=index). Non-NPS employees can see most of them on the NPS Digest page ( HYPERLINK "http://home.nps.gov/applications/digest/" http://home.nps.gov/applications/digest/):

National Park of American Samoa - National Park Service divers recently killed almost 90 crown-of-thorn starfish offshore of Malia Mai in an effort to protect the reef there from these voracious predators, which can cause significant damage to reefs. The current outbreak appears to be related to human development around the islands.

Grand Canyon NP - Diane Chalfant has been selected as the park's new deputy superintendent. Chalfant, a 32-year National Park Service career professional, is expected to move to the Grand Canyon in early March.

National Capital Region - Rick Slade has been named to the top leadership position at Monocacy National Battlefield.  He comes to the post from Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area in Atlanta, where he serves as chief of planning and resource management.

Servicewide Training and Conference Calendar - The following have been added to this week's calendar - an interdisciplinary resource protection and law training course at Albright, a webinar on rodent-associated diseases and integrated pest management in the NPS, and a new offering of the National Search and Rescue Academy next September. The entry for the basic technical rescue training course (West) has also been revised.
