INCIDENTS


Death Valley NP

Rangers Assist In Delivering Baby


H.D.T., newborn daughter of park residents P.T. and C.T., arrived at their home just before 8 a.m. on the morning of February 10th. Ranger/medic Amber Nattrass and ranger/EMT Mike Nattrass assisted in the delivery along with a flight crew from Mercy Medical Air Flight Service. H.D.T. weighed in at seven pounds and measured 19 inches long. This was the first birth recorded in the park in many years. Mom and daughter were flown to Mountain View Hospital in Las Vegas as a precaution and are now at home and doing fine. [Karen McKinlay-Jones, Chief Ranger]

Interpretation and Education Division - On Wednesday, January 31st, Deputy Director Peggy O'Dell joined representatives from government agencies, educational organizations and Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton in signing a Declaration of Learning.


Civil War to Civil Rights Program - Eastern National has published two new publications that pertain to the “Civil War to Civil Rights” theme of the ongoing sesquicentennial of the Civil War. Details are provided on how to obtain them.


Lava Beds NM - Park staff recently completed a full week of bat hibernacula surveys under a newly developed bat survey plan. The purpose of these annual surveys is to track the health and status of the monument's winter bat population.  


Blue Ridge Parkway - Blue Ridge Parkway interpreters are reaching thousands of students this winter season through the Parks As Classrooms program. It was recently featured on a local news station, which highlighted the impact these programs have in creating future park stewards. 


Mammoth Cave NP - The Edmonson County Sheriff's Department and Mammoth Cave National Park hosted a training session on February 2nd at the local high school to address school violence and active shooter situations.


Information Resources - Wayne McLaughlin, an IT specialist with the Office of Information Resources, is retiring on March 1st with 40 years of federal service.
