Upper Delaware S&RR
Body Recovered From Delaware River
A group of rafters discovered a man's body lodged on a rock in the Delaware River at Kunkeli's Rapids on the afternoon of May 4th. Rangers and members of the Narrowsburg Fire Department recovered the body from the New York side of the river at the top of the rapids. A coroner from the New York Medical Examiner's Office took possession of the body. Dental records may be required for positive identification. A joint investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death is being conducted by the rangers, New York and Pennsylvania state police, and the medical examiner's office. Mount Rainier NP - On Friday, May 3rd, Ranger Margaret Anderson was posthumously awarded the Washington State Medal of Honor, which is the state's highest law enforcement honor.
Gullah Geechee CHC - The management plan for Gullah Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor has been approved by the Secretary of the Interior, making it an official document with which to begin implementation of area projects and programs. The corridor, established by federal legislation in 2006, is the only one of 49 national heritage areas that promotes the living culture of an African American population.
Office of Learning and Development - Jim Boyd, manager of the National Park Service's Distance Learning Center, will retire in early June with more than 37 years of public service.
Conservation and Outdoor Recreation - On April 16th, Steve Elkinton received a lifetime achievement award from American Trails, Inc., at its 21st International Trails Symposium, honoring him for his 24 years of service to the National Trails System.
