Rangers Save Accident Victim
On Saturday, May 18th, rangers responded to a two-car motor vehicle accident that occurred just outside the boundary of Barataria Preserve during the park's HYPERLINK "http://inside.nps.gov/index.cfm?handler=viewnpsnewsarticle&type= Announcements&id=13898" BioBlitz event. Several responding rangers secured the scene and determined that the sole occupant of one vehicle was badly injured and wasn't breathing. Rangers Sean Marick and Michael Smoke, along with several members of the Jean Lafitte Volunteer Fire Department, removed him from the damaged vehicle and performed CPR until a West Jefferson Medical Center ambulance crew arrived and took him to the hospital. He was successfully revived. Louisiana State Police are conducting the primary accident investigation, since the accident occurred outside of park boundaries. Both occupants of the second vehicle appeared to only suffer minor injuries. [Georgia Shaw, Chief Ranger]
