NATIONAL PARK SERVICE MORNING REPORT Friday, May 30, 2014 INCIDENTS Rocky Mountain NP Teenage Visitor Rescued From Ledge On Longs Peak S.F., a 19-year-old visitor from Quebec, was ascending Longs Peak with a friend on Tuesday when they became attempted to descend, he got himself stranded in an extremely precarious location on Broadway Ledge and called for help. Although S.F. was reported to be fit, he had no technical climbing equipment and no experience as a mountaineer. He was also unprepared for a night on the mountain in snow and ice and near freezing temperatures. A rescue operation was immediately launched. The park's SAR team was joined in the effort by Rocky Mountain Rescue and a Teton Interagency helicopter. Nearly 30 people were committed to the operation. S.F. was helped off the ledge, flown to an LZ in Upper Beaver Meadows, and taken to Estes Park Medical Center. For additional details, see the news story and a minute-long video at the link below. The first ranger on scene found the body of a 23-year-old man from Mount Desert Island. Rangers and members of the Mount Desert Island SAR team recovered the body via a steep-angle raise of about 75 feet. The investigation continues, but at this time there is no
indication of foul play. Ranger Rechholtz was the incident

The event highlighted water safety and the dangers of spring runoff and swift water conditions in the park. Bighorn Canyon NRA - Longtime employee Thomas Dean Pretty On Top passed away on the morning of Saturday, May 24th, after battling with cancer. He was 50 years old. Office of Communications - The Service has awarded more than $200,000 in grants from the Land and Water Conservation Fund to help preserve land at the Civil War battlefields at South Mountain in Maryland and Appomattox Court House in Virginia. Northeast Region - Kris Heister has been selected as the new superintendent of Upper Delaware Scenic and Recreational River. She will begin her new assignment in July.
